Annotated along the left margin: “New Road to Mt Vernon in progress.” Annotated along the right margin: “Guide to Mount Vernon by the Road Maker. The reverse is blank. In nice shape, much better than usually found.
The top panel contains a detailed bird's-eye view of the Capitol Building with the city in the background. The beginning of the Washington monument can be seen in the far background. That the Capitol building is completed with the statue of freedom on top of its first dome suggests this lettersheet was produced sometime after December 3, 1863.
The bottom panel contains a detailed map of northern Virginia and Washington showing roads, railroads, towns and cities including Fairfax, Mt. Vernon, Fort Washington, Hunter's Mill, and Prospect Hill. The Bull Run (Manassas) Battlefield, to include Confederate positions, is shown on the map.
