1910 – Illustrated billhead from the New York firm, Peter Henderson & Company Seedsmen and Florists, documents the sale of flowers and seeds to the Chinese Legation in Washington, just before the Qing Dynasty collapsed and was replaced by the Republic of China
New York: 1910. This one-page billhead receipt from Peter Henderson & Company of New York, dated November 21, 1910, documents the sale of seeds and flowers to Mr. W. P. Chung of the Chinese Legation in Washington D.C. There is Chinese docketing on the reverse. In nice shape.
. Very good. Item #010601The “Old Chinese Legation” in Washington, D. C. was located in a large, three-story brick mansion at 2001 19th Street NW. It was designed by architect Waddy B. Wood. The legation served the Qing Dynasty and later the Republic of China until 1944, after which it became private condominiums.
The Manchu-led Imperial Qing Dynasty, which had ruled China since 1636, was on the verge of collapse when its legation purchased these landscaping plants and seeds for its staff in Washington, D. C. The emperor had died in 1908, and court sycophants fought to control his two-year-old successor.
An armed uprising would begin in Wuchang in less than a year, and by January 1, 1912, Sun Yat Sen’s Republic of China would have taken control of the government.
No doubt, Mr. Chung, who made this purchase, would have been replaced at that time.
Price: $100.00
