Unbound. Two different stock certificates for the Memphis City Rail Road Company, one dated 1872 and the other 1875.

The 1872 certificate measures approximately 12” x 7.25” and bears a central illustration of a horse-drawn traveling through the city, and citizens watch attentively. It was issued for 3 shares of $50 stock and bears a 25-cent U. S. Internal Revenue stamp.

The 1875 certificate measures 11.5” x 7.5” and features a central illustration of an early Tennessee Walking Horse. A large blue underprint of a trolley car pulled by two horses is centered in the certificate. It was issued for 200 shares of $50 stock. Both have been manuscript cancelled. One certificate has a light adhesive stain where it was likely attached to other certificates or paperwork at one time. In nice shape.

The Memphis City Rail Road trolley company was founded in Memphis, Tennessee in June 1865. It initially constructed ten miles of lines from the Tennessee Railroad depot near the Mississippi River along Main Street to the Louisville and Nashville Railroad depots. Other lines linked Poplar Street, the Boulevard, Beale Street, Lauderdale Street, and Vance Street, as well as the Memphis and Charleston Railroad depot.

At the time these certificates were issued, the line had been extended to Kerr Street in Chelsea, and possibly Estival Park.

The company later merged with the Citizens' Street Railway.
