Susan Hopley: Or, the Adventures of a Maid-Servant in Brother Jonathan, 17 December 1842, Anonymous
4 Anonymous Susan Hopley: Or, the Adventures of a Maid-Servant in Brother Jonathan, 17 December 1842
New York 1842 First American Edition Tabloid Good to Very Good No Jacket Folio - over 12" - 15" tall
Originally published in London as "Susan Hopley; or, Circumstantial Evidence" in 1841, Brother Jonathan issued a pirated printing, the "First American Edition," in 1842. The tabloid shows typical edge wear and has been home-bound with string. There is a two inch tear along the horizontal fold begining at the right margin. Perhaps missing a wrapper. A manuscript note above the masthead reads, "Susan Hopley was introduced to this family Christmas Day December 25 1842." Susan Hopely holds the distinction of being the first detective novel; its publication precedes Edgar Alan Poe's short story, "Murder in the Rue Morgue," by several months. In it, the title character uses detective work to bring her brother's killer to justice. It is "a novel of mystery, crime, and detection, being constructed around a crime investigation, a murder, and a disappearance occurring in the first few chapters and solved only at the novel's end." (see pp 57-66 in Ayers' Silent Voices.) Not listed in Barzun. Although largely forgotten, the novel was quite popular in its day and was even twice produced as a stageplay.
