1517-1518 – Leaf from La Mer des Histoires et Chroniques de France (The Sea of Stories and Chronicles of France)

Paris, France: Gailot Du Pre and Michel le Noir, 1517-1518. Disbound. La Mer des Histoires et Chroniques de France takes its title from Mare historiarumRudimentum novitiorum, a compilation of works by an anonymous cleric from Lübeck that was first printed around 1475. This translation was by the canon of Mello in Beauvaisis under the patronage of André de La Haye, lord of Chaumont.

It begins with the creation of the world and ends in 1473, and derives its entries from the Bible, early Church Fathers, classical and medieval authors, Aesop’s Fables. It also includes a description of the Holy Land, a geographical dictionary, and a history of the kings of France.

This leaf (8” x 12”) is from an edition published in Paris by Gailot Du Pre and Michel le Noir between 1517-1518. It features two woodcuts, one of a coronation ceremony and one of a king seated on his throne.
