Slavery

Boston: James Munroe and Company, 1835. Hardcover. First edition. Hard cover, 4.75” x 7.25”. Complete with endpapers, title page, context, and 165 text pges. Clean, toned pages. Cloth cover with original spine label reading “Channing on Slavery.” Bookplate of Franklin H. Chase inside the front cover. Some occasional minor foxing. Appears to have old, very neat hinge repairs. Soiling and wear to cover; spine label is legible but darkened. Channing’s classic anti-slavery book that was often reprinted. Channing was an important early leader in American Unitarianism and the author of several popular religious works. He became a critic of slavery after visits to Richmond and the West Indies, but his assessment was neutral enough to displease both Northern abolitionists and Southern slave-holders.
