Famous California anthology with "choice selections of prose and poetry, tales and anecdotes, historical, descriptive, humorous and sentimental pieces, mainly culled from the various newspapers and periodicals of the Pacific Coast." Includes writings from John James Audubon, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), Frank Bret Harte, and John Ruskin. Original leather binding with black/gilt spine lable. Tight binding; neatly mended front hinge; rear hinge just starting. Generally clean pages; no writing but with occasional finger smudges or stray pencil marks. Endpapers toned. Front free endpaper missing. First blank page has owner's info in pencil and three inch closed tear/scuff. Cover is in far better condition than normally found; heavy wear at spine ends. Spine title is bright and clear.
