Part III Evolutions of a Regiment Washington Government Printing Office 1864 Hard Cover Good + No Jacket Scarce. 1864 printing of the official manual of cavalry and dragoon tactics originally published in 1841. This manual belonged to Frank Michler, who was commissioned as a cavalry officer in the 5th Cavalry Regiment in 1870. Michler received brevet promotions to First Lieutenant and Captain for gallantry in action against the Apaches in Arizona. He served as a Lieutenant Colonel during the Puerto Rican campaign during the Spanish-American War and was retired from the Army in 1901 just days before his death. The manual was apparently accessioned into the War Department Library following his death. 450 pages with illustrations. 120 plates (many folding and many showing dragoons/cavalrymen using sabres and lances.) 20 pages of music for bugle calls and a quick march. Tight binding with a few old library reinforcements to hinges and between some signatures. Clean pages with owner's info on front free endpaper. Several pages have Michler's pencil highlighting. Several War Department labels, handstamps, and pocket, some with deaccession markings. Folding plates all present and in exceptionally nice condition. Unlisted Chopped Up Niggers New York McLoughlin 1874 Game Very Good Unlisted This jigsaw puzzle set has been characterized as "the earliest and most racist" children's toy published in the United States. Exceptionally scarce. There were apparent two different puzzle sets in the series; the other set appears to be slightly less scarce. This set is complete with two puzzles (each with all their pieces), box, and picture guide for one of the puzzles (the box top illustration is the picture guide for the other). Unlisted Early Republican Party Receipts - 1854 & 1856 Boston & Charlestown, MA Free Democratic State Committee & Republican Club 1854 Leaf Very Good Two early contribution receipts; one from the Boston Republican Club in 1856 and the other from the Free Democratic State Committee of Massachusetts in 1854. The Free Democratic Party was one of several splinter political parties (e.g., Liberty Party, Free Soilers, etc.) that formed in opposition to the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which repealed the Missouri Compromise and opened up the new territories of the United States to slavery. The Free Democratic Party quickly banded together with other anti-slavery parties to form the Republican Pary in 1855. The Free Democratic Party receipt was printed by J. S. Potter & Company; the Republican Party receipt is manuscript. Both receipts are made out to Oliver Smith, a prominent Massachusetts businessman, philanthropist, and statesman. Price:
