Eichenberg, Fritz St. Christopher - Wood Cut Print
New York New York Woodcut Society 1949 Limited Print Very Good Eichenberg, Fritz Signed by Artist
Eichenberg, who died in 1990, was a German-American illustrator who worked primarily in wood engraving. He began his career in Berlin after having studied at the School of Applied Arts in Cologne and the Academy of Graphic Arts in Leipzig. Born into a non-religious Jewish family, he emigrated to New York with the rise of Adolph Hitler and the Nazis. He worked in the WPA Federal Arts Project and taught art at the New School for Social Research and the Pratt Institute before serving as the chairman of the art department at the University of Rhode Island. A prolific artist, he specialized in book illustrations that showed extreme spiritual and emotional conflict, fantasy, or social satire. This wood engraving shows St. Christopher carrying Jesus on his shoulders. The image size is approximately 5.25" x 7.25" (sheet is 8" x 11") and is signed in pencil by Eichenberg in the lower right margin. The print is stored in a folder also inscribed by Eichenberg, "St. Christopher - to Ann Compter - as promised - with best wishes from Fritz Eichenberg Oct. 11, 1949". Folder is lightly toned and has a minor fold in the upper right corner.
