New York Harper & Brothers - Grosset & Dunlap 1903 Special Limited Edition Pictorial Cover Good to Very Good No Jacket
Nice copy of a Harper-Grosset "Special Limited Edition" with a photo of William Gillete on the front cover. Gillette made his fortune with Sherlock Holmes. His agent, Charles Froman, purchased Conan Doyle's five-act play, "Sherlock Holmes," in 1897 and secured Doyle’s approval to have William Gillette rewrite it. The play opened in NY in 1899 and London two years later. Gillette turned the play into a film (now lost) in 1916, and became the first man to appear as Sherlock Holmes on radio in 1930. His interpretation of the character became the model for most future Holmes illustrations and many stage/film interpretations, including Basil Rathbone's. Tight binding with sound hinges. Clean pages. Some cover wear; light scuffing to Gillette's photo.

No publishing date, but circa 1940. Movie edition features dust jacket with prominent cover photo showing Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes. Anthology includes A Study in Scarlet, A Scandal in Bohemia, The Red-headed League, and The Sign of the Four. Tight binding with sound hinges. Clean and supple pages with toning. Bright cover with crisp lettering and very little wear. Dust jacket has some edgewear and soiling. Protected by an archival cover. See accompanying scanned image.
