1 Brady, Matthew General Ambrose Burnside - Carte De Viste
New York E. Anthony Unbound Very Good
ca 1861. Scarce Burnside cdv. Burnside was the commanding officer of the 1st Rhode Island Regiment at the start of the war in May 1861. In July, he was appointed as a brigade commander in the Department of Northern Virginia and served ast 1st Bull Run (1st Manassas). In August 1861, Burnside was promoted to Brigadier General and given command of the North Carolina Expeditionary Corps (later to become IX Corps). Understanding his limitations as a leader, he twice declined offers to assume command of the Army of the Potomac. In November 1862, Lincoln ordered Burnside to assume command of the Army of the Potomac following Antietam despite his indecisiveness at "Burnside's Bridge." Burnside resigned from command in 1863 following the Union defeat at Fredericksburg, but remained on active duty and served at Chickamauga, the Wilderness, Spotslyvania, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. Burnside resigned from active duty following the Union defeat at The Crater for which he was unjustly blamed. Burnside is most famous for his distinctive facial hair, ever since referred to as "sideburns". Approximately 2.5"x4" . Thin square-cornered mounting stock; no border. Reverse reads, "Published by E Anthony. No. 501 Broadway, New York. From Photographic Negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery."

9 CDV Abdulaziz I - CDV
Constantinople P. Sebah Carte De Visite Very Good
Photographer's mark on the reverse reads, "Medailles aux Expositions Paris de Vienne / P. Sebah / 439 Grande Rue de Pera. 439 / Constantinople". Abdulaziz ws the 32nd Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, reigning between 1861 and 1876. He was the first sultan to visit Europe and cultivated positive relationships with England, France, and Russia. He modernized the Ottoman navy making it the third most powerful in the world after England and France. His alliance with Russia came into question when the Russians were found to be supporting revolts in the Empires Balkan provinces and after a massive crop failure in 1873, his lavish expenditures on palaces and the navy came under fire. He was deposed and imprisoned by his ministers in 1876. His nephew and successor, Murad V, quickly showed signs of being mentally unstable, and the ministers feared that if this was discovered by the public, they may revolt to bring back Abdulaziz. Before this could happen, however, the ministers informed the people of the empire that the former sultan had committed suicide by slitting both of his wrists with scissors that somehow appeared in his cell.

10 CDV B. P. (Benjamin Penhallow) Shillaber - CDV
Boston J. W. Black & Co. Carte De Visite Very Good
Photographer's mark on reverse reads "Photographic Artists. / J. W. Black & Co. / 333 Washington Street, / Boston". Narrow strip of light toning at top of the reverse. Shillaber created America's first humor magazine, "The Carpet-Bag," in 1851. Although it was only published for two years, Shillaber's efforts were quite significant as he 'discovered' Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens), and "The Carpet-Bag" was where Clemens published his first story, "The Dandy Frightening the Squatter." Artemus Ward (Charles Browne) was also first published in "The Carpet-Bag." After the magazine folded, Shillaber created a hit humor sensation when he published, "The Life and Sayings of Mrs. Partington." The book was so popular that Shillaber wrote ten follow-ups and spent the rest of his life on America's performing humor circuit providing readings from his works to sell-out audiences.
