NA Leaf from a 1638 Musical Psalter - The 23rd Psalm London Robert Barker 1638 Leaf Very Good 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall The 23rd Psalm from a scarce metrical psalter bound together with a Barker King James Bible. This version of the psalm has different phrasing than that found in the King James Version of the Bible. The Old Testament Psalms were often collected together in a type of devotional book known as a psalter, which usually also contained a Church calendar, canticles, prayers, and important New Testament verses. Frequently they were bound together with Bibles. Metrical psalters paraphrased these verses into poetry meant to be sung as hymns in church.

NA Leaf from a 1639 King James Version (KJV) Bible - Ecclesiastes 3 - "To every thing there is a season . . ." London Robert Barker 1639 Leaf Very Good 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall Verses in this leaf run from Ecclesiastes 1:17 through 5:19. Includes Ecclesiastes 3, "To every thing there is a season . . . ." There, Dr. John Rainolds convinced him that a new translation of the Bible was required because those that currently being printed "were corrupt and not answerable to the truth of the original." James readily agreed, as he found the then popular Geneva Bible greatly offensive, and gave the new translators specific instructions, designed to ensure it would conform to the ecclesiology of the Church of England. 54 unpaid scholars worked on the translation, and when it was completed, the original printing of the KJV was published by Robert Barker in 1611. A copy of the title page and finis from this 1639 KJV Bible will be included with this leaf.

And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death. Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die. Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way. And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth. Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house. This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee." Color is in nice shape. Text is dark and clear. The page has some minor soiling. And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound. The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up. And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed. And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters. . . ." Stiff card, printed on one side. Clean and toned. "Week of Prayer" in pencil above the printed Dakota title. Alfred L. The school accepted students from throughout the Great Plains and at its peak consisted of 18 buildings and 480 acres of land with an enrollement of over 200. It offered both academic courses and vocational training. As a linguist, Riggs believed that it was important to teach in the Dakota language to preserve the culture's way of thought and world view. Despite pressure from the federal government to promote assimilation by forcing the use of English, the school continued to conduct religious services and study in Dakota and printed a number of Bibles, tracts, and study guides, which played a major role in keeping the language alive.
