Peter the Venerable and Islam, Kritzeck, James
3 Kritzeck, James Peter the Venerable and Islam
Princeton, New Jersey Princeton University Press 1964 First Edition, 1st Printing Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
301 pages. Very hard-to-find study on Peter the Venerable. "For more than four centuries the principal source of informed Christian European knowledge of Islam stemmed from a project sponsored by Peter the Venerable, the ninth abbot of Cluny, in 1142. The project . . . consisted of the preparation of Latin translations of five Arabic works, among them the first translation of the Koran in a Western language. . . . The resulting collection, known as the Toledan Collection, was eventually printed in 1543 with an introduction by Martin Luther. . . . Many new facts concerning Peter the Venerable's project have only recently come to light. James Kritzeck has collected the available material related to the work, including new source material, in an informative study that spans the fields of Islamic studies, monasticism, medieval cultural history, and comaprative religion." Doesn't appear to have ever been read. Tight binding with sound hinges. Clean pages. Very light cover wear. Dust jacket has some minor wear.

The Twelfth of August: The Story of Buford Pusser, Morris, W. R.
4 Morris, W. R. The Twelfth of August: The Story of Buford Pusser
Nashville, Tennessee Aurora Publishers 1971 First Edition, 1st Printing Hard Boards with Cloth Spine Very Good Very Good to Good 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Signed By Subject
Very scarce 1st printing signed by Buford Pusser inside the front cover. Pusser's biography documents his fight against The Dixie Mafia and The State Line Gang. This biography was printed before the car accident (probably murder) that took his life in 1974. Used as the basis for the 1973 movie "Walking Tall." Tight binding with sound hinges. Clean pages with owner's name on front free endpaper. Light dampstain along top and fore edge of text block; affects several pages. Light cover wear; very slightly cocked. 5 Pagnol, Marcel La Glorie De Mon Pere & Le Chaeau De Ma Mere (My Father's Glory & My Mother's Castle) Souvenirs D'Enfance Tome 1 & 2 (Childhoos Memories Vol 1 & 2)
Monte Carlo, Monaco Editions Parstorelly 1973 Leatherette Near Fine No Jacket 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Dubout
Very nice two-volume set of Marcel Pagnol's autobiography with terrific color illustrations by Dubout. Pagnol, was one of the leading film-makers from the 1930s through the 1950s and the first elected to L'Académie française. Three of his films won New York Film Critics Circle Awards as the Best Foreign Films of 1939, 1940, and 1950. "But he never forgot the magic of his Provencal childhood, and when he set his memories to paper late in life the result was a great new success. My Father's Glory and My Mother's Castle appeared on the scene like a fresh breeze, captivating readers with its sweet enchantments. Pagnol recalls his days hunting and fishing in the hill country, his jaunts about Marseilles, his schoolboy diversions, and above all his family: his anticlerical father and sanctimonious uncle, his mild and beautiful mother, and many others." Almost no wear. The front endpapers of My Father are mottled, apparently the result using a little too much moisture to affix them to the cover. Both books have old French price tags inside the rear cover. Both books are in French.
