Tacuinum Sanitatis in Medicina (In Arabic: Taqwim Es-Sihha. In English: Overview of Medicine in Tabular Form.) Facsimile., Elbochasim de Baldach (Ibn Botlan)
11 Elbochasim de Baldach (Ibn Botlan) Tacuinum Sanitatis in Medicina (In Arabic: Taqwim Es-Sihha. In English: Overview of Medicine in Tabular Form.) Facsimile.
Graz, Austria Akademische Druck- u. Verlagsanstalt (ADEVA) 1986 Leather Near Fine Folio - over 12" - 15" tall
High quality facsimile edition of the "Tacuinum Sanitatis in Medicina," a 14th century Italian medical guide with 206 colorful miniatures; Vienna, Austrian National Library, Cod. Vindob. S. N. 2644. From the Arabic work of the physician Ibn Botlan. "This lavishly pictured handbook of medicine was conceived for a lay public, in particular for a lady of the upper aristocracy or of a rich patrician family who was able to afford, and read, such a costly 'reference work' on household management as well as on topics of health and cure. . . The 206 full-page miniatures show numerous plants and animals, drugs and food, as well as winds, seasons and other environmental phenomena. The book describes their effect on the human organism according to classical medicine tuition. A text below each picture describes both the benefits and shortfalls of the object depicted. The Tacuinum thus constitutes a medical picture book derived from the classical herbals tradition." - from the publisher. The facsimile is accompanied by a second volume of commentary that includes a translation of the text in English and German. With the original slipcase. Both volumes and the slipcase are in very nice shape.

In this book, Gibney strongly advocates for the use of plaster of paris, traction, and even surgery in the treatment of orthopedic cases, which was a radical departure from the "expectant" treatment (fresh air, diet, exercise, and electrical stimulation) which had been historically provided at the facility.

About eight leaves have some edgewear include short, marginal, closed tears. Clean pages with occasional spots of foxing. Light cover wear. Inscribed by Jackson to L. P. Davis, Esq. James Jackson, Sr., was a Boston physician who, in 1803, led in the founding of the Somerille Asylum for the Insane (now the famous McLean Psychiatric Hospital) and the Massachusetts General Hospital (where he served as the first physician). He was also a professor at Harvard Medical School. In 1835, following the untimely death of his son, Jackson resigned both positions and never recovered from the loss. Jackson Jr. hadgrown sick and quickly died at the age of 24, shortly after graduating from medical school in France and returning to Boston. Garrison (p. 439) notes that his "early death robbed American medicine of one of [Pierre-Charles-Alexander] Louis' most promising pupils" but not before he "left a valuable memoir on the cholera epideic of 1832 and first described the prolonged expiratory sound as an important diagnostic sign of incipient phthisis." Jackson's privately printed obituary noted that at the time of his death, he was studying "the connection between certain morbid appearances in the mucous membrane of the small intestine and certain forms of fever." The memoir is divided into three sections: the memoir, letters Jackson Jr. sent to his father, and summaries of cases Jackson Jr. collected.
